# HDR10+ Technologies, LLC > HDR10+ is an open, royalty-free dynamic HDR standard developed and governed by HDR10+ Technologies, LLC — jointly owned by Samsung and Panasonic. It delivers scene-by-scene tone mapping of brightness, contrast, and color using dynamic metadata (SMPTE ST 2094-40), ensuring HDR content is displayed as close as possible to the colorist's creative intent on every certified display. More than 180 companies have adopted the standard and over 22,000 products are certified worldwide. ## The Standard HDR10+ extends the baseline HDR10 standard (SMPTE ST 2084 / PQ transfer function, BT.2020 color primaries) with dynamic metadata that adjusts the tone mapping curve on a scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame basis. The standard supports a peak brightness range of 0–10,000 nits via the full PQ curve. HDR10+ is fully backward compatible: HDR10+ content plays correctly on HDR10-only displays using the static metadata layer. HDR10+ metadata is carried as SEI messages in HEVC bitstreams and in AV1 and VP9 streams. The specification is SMPTE ST 2094-40. ## Variants **HDR10+ ADVANCED** — extends HDR10+ with four additional metadata-driven features for premium display implementations: - Enhanced Overall Brightness (HDR10+ Bright): raises scene brightness beyond the standard tone mapping floor where display capability allows, without violating Filmmaker Mode - Intelligent Motion Smoothing: content providers embed scene-by-scene creative latitude for motion processing (scale 0–5), allowing certified displays to reduce judder while respecting the filmmaker's intent. Reference point: 14 foot-lambert cinema experience. - Local Tone Mapping: defines elliptical, circular, or rectangular regions of the frame for independent tone mapping, enabling simultaneous detail in bright highlights and dark shadows within the same scene - Content Descriptive Metadata: genre classification (Movie, Sports, Animation, News, General) plus 64-bit scene attribute tags (lighting environment, motion type, camera perspective, content origin, etc.) that certified displays can use to optimize image processing per scene. Tag system is extensible; HDR10+ Technologies, LLC is the registrar for new tags. Amazon Prime Video became the first streaming service to deliver HDR10+ ADVANCED content in 2026 on Samsung-certified displays. **HDR10+ GAMING** (also known as Source Side Tone Mapping / SSTM) — enables GPU-side tone mapping for interactive game content. The game engine reads the certified display's declared peak luminance capability via EDID/VSVDB and renders HDR output precisely matched to that display. Signals are carried over HDMI 2.0 or later, or DisplayPort 1.4 or later. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) activates automatically on certified displays. Certified GPU sources include NVIDIA and Intel. **HDR10+ ADAPTIVE** — extends HDR10+ with real-time ambient light compensation. Certified displays use a built-in sensor to continuously adjust tone mapping based on room brightness. Over 6,300 certified products support HDR10+ ADAPTIVE. ## Certification Program HDR10+ Technologies, LLC operates a formal certification and logo program. All devices carrying the HDR10+ certification mark have been independently tested at HDR10+ Authorized Test Centers (ATCs) against published test specifications. Certification is required to use any HDR10+ logo or certification mark. The program is royalty-free — no per-device royalties are payable to the LLC. For HDR10+ GAMING, both the source device (GPU) and the display must be independently certified. ## Ecosystem Scale - 180+ Adopter companies (content, display, source device, SoC, and tool categories) - 22,000+ certified products across 11 product categories - ~80% of televisions sold worldwide carry HDR10+ (source: HDR10+ Ecosystem Whitepaper, Dec 2025) - ~75% of the global smartphone market ships with HDR10+ (source: HDR10+ Ecosystem Whitepaper, Dec 2025) - Certified product categories: televisions, mobile phones, streaming devices, OTT devices, computer monitors, projectors, Blu-ray players, GPUs, automotive displays, in-flight entertainment systems, A/V receivers ## Content & Streaming - Amazon Prime Video: all HDR-enabled content carries HDR10+ metadata; first streaming service to launch HDR10+ (December 2017); first to launch HDR10+ ADVANCED (2026). B.A. Winston, VP Technology, Prime Video: "All of Prime Video's HDR-enabled content has HDR10+ capability and metadata." - Netflix: HDR10+ available on AV1-encoded content - Apple TV+: HDR10+ on original series and films, and selected iTunes rentals and purchases - YouTube: preserves HDR10+ metadata uploaded with content - Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+: support HDR10+ content delivery - Supported streaming devices: Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Roku, Chromecast with Google TV, Walmart ONN 4K, TiVo ## Broadcast HDR10+ is approved for ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV). Active HDR10+ broadcasts are live in 40+ US markets, led by NBC 4 New York and Gray Television. Gray Television simultaneously broadcasts HDR10+ (SMPTE ST 2094-40) and a second dynamic HDR format (SMPTE ST 2094-10) from a single HEVC stream using HDR Dual Carry. NextGen TV now reaches more than three-quarters of US households. ## Standards Recognition HDR10+ (SMPTE ST 2094-40) is recognized by: - SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) - Blu-ray Disc Association - Consumer Technology Association (CTA) - Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) - Society of Cable Television Engineers (SCTE) - Web Application Video Ecosystem (WAVE) - Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) - Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC 3.0) ## Key Pages - [HDR10+ Overview](https://hdr10plus.org/): Main site — standard overview and ecosystem - [HDR10+ FAQ](https://hdr10plus.org/hdr10-faq/): Frequently asked questions about HDR10+ - [HDR10+ ADVANCED FAQ](https://hdr10plus.org/hdr10-advanced-faq/): FAQ on HDR10+ ADVANCED features - [HDR10+ GAMING FAQ](https://hdr10plus.org/hdr10-gaming-faq/): FAQ on HDR10+ GAMING / SSTM - [Certified Products](https://hdr10plus.org/certified-products/): Searchable list of all certified devices - [Adopters](https://hdr10plus.org/adopters/): Full list of HDR10+ Adopter companies - [Games](https://hdr10plus.org/games/): Certified HDR10+ GAMING title list - [Resources & Whitepapers](https://hdr10plus.org/resources/): Technical whitepapers and ecosystem documents - [Press Releases](https://hdr10plus.org/press-releases/): Official announcements - [Developer Documentation](https://hdr10plus.org/developer-documentation/): Technical resources for implementers - [Partner Products](https://hdr10plus.org/partner-products/): HDR10+ certified partner tools and services - [Licensing](https://hdr10plus.org/#licenses): Adopter fee schedule and licensing information ## Contact HDR10+ Technologies, LLC 3855 SW 153rd Drive, Beaverton, Oregon 97006 info@hdr10plus.org certification@hdr10plus.org (certification inquiries)
